Building tips for a smoother cut with a robo sander!

Now, thanks to the Robo Sander, available at Stew Mac, you can get an even smoother cut without chipping when using router.  See below!

What is a robo sander? This is a sanding drum that works with your drill press.  However, the sander has a template of its own at the bottom that works in harmony with my templates! Look at the picture above to see how I setup the drill press.

1) I routed a hole on a spare board 3/4" thick.  This is so you can position the sander down into the board so the guitar template is flush with the drum sander template.

2) I clamped the board on top of the drill press elevated with two 1/2" X 3/4" boards to allow the drum sander to countersink into the board without rubbing the drill press stand.

3) Adjust the stand so that the template part of the drum sander is flush with the guitar template.  Be sure that the sanding part of the drum can make contact with the entire thickness of the guitar blank you are working with.

Using my templates, trace the template onto a body blank.  Rough cut with a bandsaw and leave approximately 1/16" inch of wood around the perimeter of the guitar cut.  This is the 1/16" that you will be sanding off!

Clamp the guitar template to the body blank.  Clamp on two places that will allow access to the sander.  You can move these around throughout the process to allow access to sanding the body.  Be sure to clamp the template to the side of the body blank that you choose to be the back of the guitar.

Lay the blank flat on the template and guide it along the sanding drum.  Try to do this in one direction for smoother sanding.  The template on the sanding drum will turn along with the sander until the guitar template meets with it; the drum sander template will stop turning when the wood has been sanded off and the two templates meet flush. Don't force it!  Guide along smoothly!

Look how smooth that is!  And you did not chip away any wood like you would with a router!
